HM Lord Lieutenant Mr D Byron Lewis launches the 215 D Day Diorama at St Marys Church Swansea

The D Day exhibition located in St Marys Church has been officially launched by HM Lord Lieutenant Mr D Byron Lewis, High Sheriff Mr Martyn Jenkins and the Lord Mayor Mrs Ceinwen Thomas, which marks the 70th Anniversary of Operation Overlord and the forthcoming City and County of Swansea D Day Service of Remembrance at 14.30 hours Sunday 8th June 2014.

The fourteen foot square diorama is a tribute to the Normandy Veterans Association of South West Wales, its members and its late President Mr Doug Gausden, who was awarded the 'Legion d'honneur medal' for his bravery by the French Government and was a Life Vice President of the Squadron.

The Diorama, which took three years to build, has been constructed by the Staff and Cadets of the 215 (City of Swansea) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets, under the guidance of Civilian Instructors Mr Julian Hutchings, Mrs Gill Hutchings and Mr Neil Hutchings.

The model is being exhibited in St Marys Church until 12 Nov 14 with the kind permission of the Reverend Father Simon, Team Vicar throughout this period and has been officially opened to lead up to the service on the 8th June.

Squadron Leader Phill Flower said," Anyone looking at this huge model will have an insight into the D Day landings and the public can press a button to play a one minute soundtrack of the battle of D Day, which gives a chilling effect. The Cadets and the Staff have produced an immense display in honour of our long association with the Normandy Veterans of South West Wales and it is befitting that it is displayed throughout this anniversary period.

I would sincerely welcome all members of the community to attend the 70th Anniversary D Day Service next week to show their respects for this historical amphibious landing.

I am also proud to say that the City and County of Swansea have asked the Cadets to produce a similar diorama for the Battle of the Somme, which will take three years to build and will be on displayed during the last anniversary year of World War 1".
